2023 Nobel Peace Prize: Narges Mohammadi Who Fight Against Women’s Oppression In Iran To Receive Award

Narges Mohammadi who fought against oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights will receive the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.

Narges Mohammadi who fought against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all will receive the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has taken the decision keeping in mind the work done by Narges for women empowerment.

In a statement, the committee said, “This year’s Nobel Peace Prize also recognises the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women.”

About Jailed Narges Mohammadi

Notably, Mohammadi is the 19th woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and the second Iranian woman, after human rights activist Shirin Ebadi won the award in 2003. There was no immediate reaction from Iranian state television and other state-controlled media. Some semiofficial news agencies acknowledged Mohammadi’s win in online messages, citing foreign press reports.

Before being jailed, Mohammadi was vice president of the banned Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran. She has been close to Ebadi, who founded the center. In 2018, Mohammadi, an engineer, was awarded the 2018 Andrei Sakharov Prize.

On-going Protest

The decision to recognize her comes amid ongoing protests in Iran related to the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who reportedly faced detention by Iran’s morality police for violating strict hijab rules. While human rights activists attribute her death to the actions of the moral police, Iranian authorities deny their involvement.

The Nobel Prizes carry a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1 million). Winners also receive an 18-carat gold medal and diploma at the award ceremonies in December. The winner of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize is chosen by a panel of experts in Norway from a list of just over 350 nominations.
