Chopped dates, baking soda, butter, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, self-raising flour, salt.
Start by soaking 1 cup of chopped dates in 1 cup of boiling water. Add 1 tsp of baking soda. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
In a bowl, cream together 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup brown sugar until fluffy.
Add 2 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla to the butter mixture. Beat until smooth.
Stir in the soaked dates and mix well.
Pour the batter into a greased baking dish. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean.
Pour the warm sauce over the baked pudding. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
