The Trishul, or trident, represents three important aspects of life – creation, preservation, and destruction.
Creation – The divine power that brings life. Preservation – The power that nurtures and sustains life. Destruction – The necessary force to end and renew life.
The Damru is a small drum Shiva carries. Its sound symbolizes the creation of the universe and keeps the balance of life with its rhythm.
The Damru’s unique shape, narrow in the middle and wide at both ends, symbolizes the unity of dualities—male and female.
As Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, Lord Shiva uses the Trishul and Damru to create, protect, and end the universe.
The Trishul and Damru together show the balance of creation and destruction, keeping the universe in flow.
