The Louvre, Paris In terms of its size, the Louvre Museum in Paris is the world's most important museum and has more than 70,000 metres of exhibition space. And, by reputation, they're also one of the best and have works such as "the world-famous Venus de Milo" or Mona Lisa at their disposal from the ancient to 19th century.

The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg On size, Second place goes to the State Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg. But the biggest collection of paintings on earth is at this Art Gallery, first established in Russia by Czar Nicholas I and now open to the public.

Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo The Tokyo National Museum, which is the oldest and biggest Japanese museum, was established in the peaceful environment of Ueno Park. The collection includes works from the period of ancient and medieval Japan, as well as those travelling through the Silk Road connecting Europe to East Asia.

The Neues Museum, Berlin The Neues Museum in Berlin opened to the public in 1855 and had originally been constructed as a branch of the Altes Museum across the street. Despite the destruction caused by World War II, it had been restored and reopened in 2009 so that millions more could be welcomed to its great halls.
