Onions, garlic, broth, butter, olive oil, thyme, bay leaves, baguette, Gruyère, salt, pepper.
Add onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes until golden and tender.
Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Pour water in scraping up the brown bits from the bottom of the pot.
Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes to let the flavors meld.
Toast slices of baguette until golden and crispy.
Top with whipped cream, cocoa powder, or chocolate shavings. Slice and enjoy.
