Central Jail “Dagshai” was built in 1847 during the British rule in Dagshai cantonment, located about 65 kms from Shimla.
Irish soldiers, along with Indians, were imprisoned here by the British.
Mahatma Gandhi visited Dagshai on August 1, 1920, to meet those soldiers and stayed in the jail for 2 days.
It is said that Nathuram Godse, who was convicted of killing Mahatma Gandhi, was the last prisoner of Dagshai jail.
This Jail of Dagshai was also known as "Daag-E-Shahi".
Due to harsh torture given to the prisoners, this jail was also called as the "Kala Paani Of Himachal." Today, this historical jail has been turned into a museum.
