Wash rice and dal well in water.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add tempering ingredients, and saute for a minute.
Add onions, tomatoes, and cook for 5 minutes.
Add salt, sugar, spices, and saute, then add veggies and cook until the raw smell disappears.
Pour in water, add dal, rice, and tamarind extract, then bring to a boil.
Pressure cook for 5 whistles, simmer for 15 minutes, then mix in ghee and serve with papad and pickle.
