Welsh cakes are a beloved treat in Wales, perfect for tea time. Let’s dive into how you can make these simple yet delicious treats at home!
- 225g self-raising flour - 100g butter - 50g caster sugar - 50g currants or raisins - 1 egg, beaten - A pinch of nutmeg and cinnamon - A little milk (if needed)
Mix flour and spices. Rub in the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in sugar and currants.
Add the beaten egg and mix into a soft dough. If needed, add a bit of milk to bring the dough together.
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1cm thick. Use a round cutter to shape the cakes.
Heat a griddle or heavy frying pan. Cook the Welsh cakes for about 3 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
Sprinkle with a little caster sugar and serve warm with tea!
