He won first International tournament in 2013. After that, he became India's youngest International master. Other tournaments include: asian Under-12 Championship (2012); World Under-14 Championship (2014); World Under-16 Championship (2017).
He held the number one position in the FIDE World Rankings, in 2022. He also won the World Blitz Chess Championship in 2022. He defeated China’s Ding Liren in the 14th and final game of the World Chess Championship on December 12, 2024.

Amul honoured Gukesh for his biggest achievement. He got featured in Amul Topical as he was was seen taking on the Amul girl in a game of chess. He received a prize of Rs. 5 crore from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.
