The Central China floods of 1931, the deadliest natural disaster in recorded history, were caused by excessive rains that fell over central China in July and August of that year. About two million people perished as a result.

THE 1931 YANGTZE RIVER FLOODS

In the late 1880s, the Yellow River (Huang He) in China was perilously located much above most of the surrounding terrain. An estimated 900,000 to 2 million people perished in the flood.

THE 1887 YELLOW RIVER FLOOD

On January 23, 1556, the worst earthquake ever recorded struck the Shaanxi province of China. Although the precise magnitude of the earthquake has been lost to history, geophysicists of today estimate it to be approximately magnitude 8.
