This Hubble image shows part of planetary nebula Caldwell 2 (NGC 40). Gas is expanding from the central star, which is at the end of its life.
This 2009 image of Caldwell 2’s central star was captured with Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3.
Caldwell 3, located north of the Big Dipper, is part of the Ursa Major galaxy group, which has at least 34 galaxies.
Caldwell 4, also called the Iris Nebula (NGC 7023), is a reflection nebula. Its color comes from light scattered by its central star.
Caldwell 5, or IC 342, is a spiral galaxy about 11 million light-years from Earth.
In 2005, astronomers used Hubble’s ACS to capture this close-up of stars and nebulae in Caldwell 5 (IC 342).
