In a shocking incident that took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzzaffarnagar district, a scooter owner was slapped with a traffic challan (fine) of Rs 20.74 lakh. After the image of the hefty fine quickly went viral on social media, the police rectified the error and revised the challan to Rs 4000. According to reports, the incident occurred on November 4 at the Gandhi Colony checkpoint under the New Mandi police station limits.
Challan Issued For Multiple Violations
The scooter rider from Uttar Pradesh was initially issued a shocking traffic challan of Rs 20.74 lakh for multiple violations. The challan mentioned that the rider did not possess a valid driving license or the papers of the vehicle. Additionally, he was riding the two-wheeler without wearing a helmet and was carrying another person with him.

Challan Amount Turns Out To Be Error
The authorities soon realized that Rs 20.74 lakh fine was due to an error. The challan further reads, “Available records show you own the vehicle. Therefore, through this notice, details of the traffic rule violations committed by the vehicle, along with evidence, are being sent with the intention that in case of admission of the charges related to traffic rule violations, the charges should be compounded within three days by following the prescribed compounding procedure. Otherwise, the case will be presented for cognizance before the competent court.”
Fine Revised To Rs 4000
Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) allows the police to confiscate vehicles in certain cases. However, the sub-inspector who issued the challan to the scooter rider reportedly forgot to mention ‘207 MV,’ and it was mistakenly added to the total amount, making the fine Rs 20,74,000. The police later rectified the error and revised the challan to Rs 4000.
