Ahead of hosting their first ODI World Cup 2023 match at iconic Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Friday gave fans a pleasant surprise with a glimpse of revamped venue and especially the seats where MS Dhoni’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning six landed in the final against Sri Lanka.
The MCA took to X (previously known as Twitter) to please cricket fans with the picture of the special seats along with a sweet message.
“The two seats where MS Dhoni’s 2011 ODI World Cup winning six landed at the Wankhede Stadium will forever be symbolic to every cricket fan,” wrote MCA.
The special seats have two replica trophies of the World Cup around it. The photograph of Team India posing with the 2011 trophy in the background is also present there.
Ahead of the World Cup, MCA President Amol Kale had said that the two special seats will be permanently named after MS Dhoni and will be known as ‘MS Dhoni seats’. The MCA had also decided to auction those two seats. The funds collected from this auction will be utilised to provide scholarships to emerging players.
The iconic Wankhede Stadium, which has hosted many historic matches in the past, will see England and South Africa lock horns in an all important ODI World Cup 2023 match on Saturday.
Both England and South Africa come into this match having been on the receiving end of huge shocks in their respective last matches.
Defending champions England’s loss to Afghanistan was a huge blow to their semi-final chances, leaving them with just one win and two points from their first three matches. On the other hand, South Africa had suffered a loss against the Netherlands.
So, both teams will be looking to bounce back at the Wankhede ground, which is known for being batting-friendly.
