New Delhi: Spanish football legend Iker Casillas has announced that he is a “gay” and urged people to “respect” him to be a gay person.

The footballer took to Twitter to make the announcement. It comes just over a year after he and his wife separated.

In March 2021, the former goalie’s long-time partner, Sara Carbonero, acknowledged that she and her lover had “chosen separate ways,” but they would still remain in touch to carry on the “marvellous job” of raising their two children.

In response to the outpouring of support for Casillas, former Spain teammate Carles Puyol wrote: “Iker, it’s time to share our story.” with the emojis for a kiss and a heart.
