The anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out has urged FIFA to clarify what measures, if any, have been implemented regarding Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández’s role in a racism controversy that occurred last summer. The Argentine international was captured on video with his fellow countrymen singing a chant containing offensive lyrics directed at French footballers of African descent following the 2024 Copa America final. The incident drew widespread criticism, with France’s football association formally condemning the chant as “racist and discriminatory” in a complaint to FIFA, raising concerns about potential consequences for Fernández.
Calls For Clarity On Enzo Fernández’s Punishment
Following the racism controversy, Enzo Fernández publicly apologized and underwent an “internal disciplinary procedure” at Chelsea in July. Despite this incident, he was appointed vice-captain by new head coach Enzo Maresca at the beginning of the 2024/25 Premier League season. However, there are still concerns about whether any further action will be taken. A BBC report indicates that Kick It Out chief executive Samuel Okafor has reached out to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez, asking for clarification on whether Fernández will face any additional repercussions.

Kick It Out Urges FIFA For Transparency On Enzo Fernández’s Disciplinary Action
Kick It Out chief executive Samuel Okafor has criticized FIFA and the FA for their lack of transparency regarding the investigation into Enzo Fernández’s involvement in a racist and transphobic chant following Argentina’s victory in the 2024 Copa America. Despite numerous inquiries, no formal actions have been taken, raising concerns about accountability. While Chelsea has committed to providing Fernández with educational training, Okafor emphasized the broader implications of the incident and questioned why FIFA has not enforced similar measures for Argentina’s players, referencing Rodrigo Bentancur’s recent FA ban for discriminatory comments. He urged FIFA to adopt a strong stance against discrimination, warning that failure to act could undermine the credibility of football.
