U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed the possibility of trade talks with India until the tariff issue is addressed. The U.S. has imposed 50% tariffs on India, with half effective from Thursday and the remaining half, a penalty for India’s Russian oil purchases, set to take effect on August 27. The executive order asserts that these imports, whether direct or through intermediaries, pose an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States, warranting emergency economic measures.
When asked by a reporter whether he expects increased trade negotiations with India after announcing 50% tariffs, Trump shrugged his shoulders and replied, “No, not until we get it resolved.”
President Trump’s statement follows the White House’s executive order issued Wednesday, imposing an additional 25% tariff on India, bringing the total tariffs to 50%. Trump stated that the increased tariffs address India’s trade with Russia, which the U.S. claims “undermines efforts to counter Russia’s harmful activities.”
“India’s subsequent reselling of this oil on the open market, often at significant profit, further enables the Russian Federation’s economy to fund its aggression,” the White House added, referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
