Centre faces backlash for proposing to make Hindi official language

New Delhi: In a waging language war with the Centre, Southern leaders have come down to roads to protest against the recommendation of parliamentary panel to make Hindi the medium of instruction in central educational institutes.

DMK Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin who is the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin Saturday joined an ongoing protest urging the central government not to consider the proposal.

Udhayanidhi Stalin said: “People of Tamil Nadu will not accept your imposition of Hindi in any way. If you try to impose Hindi again, we will go to Delhi and protest.”

Leaders of southern states including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan have severely criticised the recommendation given by a panel which was headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In its defense, the Union government said the proposal was made in order to lower the usage of English as official language. This, however, is not acceptable by these states at all.

Meanwhile, the leaders of southern states have alleged that the government is attempting to “erode regional languages”.
