20 Dead as bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur catches fire; PM Modi announces ex-gratia

In a shocking incident, a private bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur suddenly caught fire on Tuesday afternoon near Thaiyat village, leaving 20 passengers dead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased. Additionally, Rs 50,000 will be provided to those injured in the incident.

The bus, which caught fire while on its way, had departed from Jaisalmer around 3 pm, following its usual schedule. According to eyewitnesses, smoke began rising from the vehicle near Thaiyat village, and soon after, flames engulfed the entire bus, injuring several people. The number of casualties is expected to rise.

As the fire engulfed the bus, passengers frantically tried to escape through windows and doors, resulting in injuries. Local villagers and passersby promptly rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts even before emergency services arrived. They used water and sand from nearby sources, helping to extinguish the fire and assist those trapped inside.

Fifteen individuals sustained burn injuries, including three children and four women who were critically injured, police officials confirmed. The injured were taken to Jawahar Hospital in Jaisalmer in three ambulances arranged by residents and the police. Patients with severe burns were referred to Jodhpur for specialized treatment. According to an IANS report, among the seriously injured were Imamat (30) and her son, both later transferred to Jodhpur for further medical care. Army personnel from a nearby base also joined the rescue and firefighting operations. With the support of the fire brigade, the blaze was finally brought under control after about an hour.

Officials stated that the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, though preliminary findings suggest a possible short circuit or engine overheating. Police have launched an investigation, and inquiries are ongoing.

CM Bhajan Lal Sharma Issues Instructions

CM Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed grief over the accident. He spoke with the Collector and Superintendent of Police over the phone and directed them to provide all possible assistance to the victims. He also directed them to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. The CM stated that he is continuously receiving feedback on the tragic incident.
