Arshdeep Singh has made rapid strides in international cricket after a slow start at the domestic level. The fast bowler who was a part of the 2018 Under 19 World Cup winning team had to wait for his opportunity to shine which he got in the form of the Indian Premier League. Arshdeep hasn’t looked back since then and has made a name for himself, especially in T20 cricket.

The Beginning

Unlike his fellow fast bowlers Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti both of whom became an overnight sensation after India won the 2018 Under 19 World Cup Arshdeep had to wait comparatively little longer for his chances courtesy of the fact that the fast bowler didn’t get many opportunities in the Under 19 World Cup. But as they say, good things take time Arshdeep was picked in Punjab’s Under 23 squad for the Colonel C.K. Naydu Trophy where he picked up a hattrick which helped him earn a spot in the squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He had a decent outing in the domestic fifty-over competition claiming two wickets against Himachal Pradesh. Following his impressive performances in domestic cricket Arshdeep was called by Punjab Kings for trials and was picked by the franchise in the 2019 IPL auction. Although the fast bowler had a quiet first couple of seasons in the league picking up three and eight wickets in the 2019 and 2020 seasons respectively Punjab Kings kept on backing him and Arshdeep repaid the faith shown in him by taking 18 wickets in the 2021 season, when he was the side’s second-highest wicket-taker, and 17 wickets in 2023, the most for the franchise that year.

The International Debut

Consistent performances in IPL and domestic cricket combined with his ability to bowl accurate yorkers in the death overs earned Arshdeep his maiden international call-up when the fast bowler was picked for India’s tour of England in 2022. After his T20I debut in England, Arshdeep took seven wickets in five games against West Indies, a performance that got him into the 2022 T20 Asia Cup, where he was the only bowler other than Bhuvneshwar Kumar to pick up more than four wickets.

The Defining Moment

Arshdeep formed a formidable new ball pair along with Buvneshwar Kumar during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia where he got rid of Pakistani batter Muhammad Rizwan and Babar Azam which can be termed as one of the moments for him to cherish in his short international career along with his ability to bowl pinpoint yorkers in the death overs in T20 cricket.

The Concern

Despite all the praises that the fast bowler has received over the years one of the biggest concerns about Arshdeep’s bowling has been his tendency to overstep which costed India matches against New Zealand and Sri Lanka and there are high chances of such instances reoccurring during a crucial game.

The Step-up

To fulfill his dream of representing India in the longest format Arshdeep signed a five-match contract with Kent during the 2023 County Championship and the fast bowler did a decent job in his debut match by picking up four wickets.

The Comeback

As far as his ODI career is concerned Arshdeep went wicketless in his debut series against New Zealand but made the most of the opportunity in his next ODI assignment against South Africa as he guided India to a memorable series win by picking up ten wickets in the three-match series at an impressive economy of 3.51
