Apple is drastically cutting the production of the all-new iPhone Air and shifting its focus toward the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models, according to a report by Nikkei Asia. The business publication claims to have learned of a major production cut for the iPhone Air, driven by weaker-than-expected consumer interest, bringing it close to “end-of-production levels.”
Despite a strong initial response—selling out within hours of its launch in China—the overall reception for the device has been lukewarm.
Sales Projections
Sales projections have dropped significantly. While Nikkei has not disclosed the full extent to which Apple has reduced production, it notes that the changes will become visible in Apple’s supply chain over the coming months.
According to a MacRumors report, a survey conducted by KeyBanc Capital Markets revealed that there is “virtually no demand for the iPhone Air,” and only limited willingness to pay for a foldable device. Demand for the other iPhone 17 models is said to be healthy by comparison, with consumer preference continuing to shift toward the Pro and Pro Max models.
Another report by Japan’s Mizuho Securities highlights that Apple is expected to reduce iPhone Air production by one million units this year. Additionally, there are reports suggesting Apple plans to increase production of the iPhone 17 models by two million units.
Apple isn’t the only smartphone manufacturer experiencing low demand for slim or foldable phones. Samsung has reportedly called off the release of a successor to its S25 Edge, due to similarly disappointing sales figures.
