World Post Day 2025- UN Secretary’s Message

On the occasion of World Post Day, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has also noted the contribution of postal services in his message. He has thanked postal workers and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting a strong, sustainable postal service for communities and for the world. “On World Post Day, we celebrate the 4.6 million postal workers who connect countries and communities around the globe. This year’s theme – “Post for People: Local service. Global reach” – honours the people behind the service, and reminds us that when individuals work together, their impact can become truly global,” Guterres stated.

“With the coordination of the Universal Postal Union, postal workers form a network that delivers more than mail. It delivers essential services, opportunity, and trust, reaching remote areas, connecting villages and cities, bridging the rural-urban divide, and creating a world that is within everyone’s reach,” he added.

World Post Day 2025- A look at India’s journey

India’s postal system has an interesting story of evolution from informal methods of communication, such as runners, horse-mounted messengers, and carrier pigeons into a well-organised and structured postal network. The formal establishment of India Post took shape during British colonial rule. In 1854, the first postage stamp, known as the “Scinde Dawk,” was issued in the Sindh region (present-day Pakistan), marking the beginning of formal postal services in India.

Following independence in 1947, India Post underwent extensive reforms aimed at modernising and expanding its reach across the country and today it provides a range of services. To keep up with challenges in the digital era, India Post has embraced digital transformation by introducing services such as e-post and e-commerce solutions, making post services relevant even today.

Conclusion

As we celebrate World Post Day 2025, it is a reminder to recognise the importance of postal services in our daily lives. Post continues to remain a vital bridge in connecting people, communities, and opportunities across the globe
