New Delhi: You’ve probably heard of many such marriages, in which two women or two men marry after the passage of the LGBTQ Act. This culture is prevalent these days. However, there is one place in the world where women have been marrying each other for centuries, and the reason for this is also very special. There is a Tanzanian tribe where women marry each other but have physical relations with someone else.
Two women marry
In the Kuria tribe of Tanzania’s Nayamongo village, a woman marries another woman. This custom has been practised here for centuries. It’s called Numba Nyobhu, which translates to “women’s home.” Both women live in the same house as partners after marriage. They do not, however, have a physical relationship. Both have a strong mental attachment to each other but are unable to form a homosexual relationship.
Have right to bear children
Tanzanian tribeswomen can have a relationship with any man and care for the child born from it after marrying another woman. The husband has no claim to this child; in this country, women engage in physical relations with men in order to have a child. She divorces the man and marries another woman after having a child.
What is the reason for it?
In this Tanzanian tribe, two women marry in order to abolish patriarchy. The goal of this tradition is to allow these tribes’ women to own property. Women who do not have children or are widows do not have the right to keep their property; therefore, marrying another woman grants them the right to keep their property.
