The Indian historical action movie Chhaava presents a portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj through Vicky Kaushal that showcases the second ruler of the Maratha Empire under the direction of Laxman Utekar. Asirgarh Fort serves as a hiding place according to the movie for valuables that Mughal forces stole from the Marathas.

Locals using flashlights and digging tools formed a massive crowd to dig near the Asirgarh Fort during night in their search for buried gold. The police stopped their activities when they arrived during the search, as reported by First Post. Asirgarh Fort maintains its historical importance as it was linked to Mughal Emperor Akbar. The movie includes scenes suggesting that Mughal forces looted treasures from the Marathas and concealed them in Asirgarh Fort.
A group of locals got together by the fort in Burhanpur following the Bollywood movie Chhaava to search for Mughal-period gold which they thought was buried there. A video showing the incident spread throughout social media network.
