South Africa experienced an unusual snowstorm that recently occurred, silencing much of its population. It both covered the major highways and put several people indoors since the whole nation was covered by an enormous amount of snow. This rare sighting did not go unnoticed by GG Conservation lion sanctuary-and it posted curious videos of the lions walking about under snow.
Response From Lions Against The Snowstorm
A series of videos posted on Instagram by GG Conservation shows the lions roaming through snow-covered terrain. While many were seemingly distracted from their usual concerns, others seemed curious and even perplexed at this unfamiliar sight of white falling snowflakes. One of the posts shows a bit of Luna and Snowdrop enjoying the time in the snow. “Mother nature can do anything she wants anywhere she wants.”
Rare Snowfall In South Africa
While South Africa is generally not covered with snow, it occasionally experiences such weather conditions, especially at higher altitudes. There are several ski resorts in South Africa, though they are operated relatively infrequently. According to the GG Conservation representative who filmed the lions during the snowfall, Suzanne Scott, the lions were “curious and not really sure” of the snow, as it was an unusual event for the lions.
Cold Conditions For Lions
Despite the extreme conditions being freezing, the conservation group was optimistic that the lions had performed exceptionally well under the harsh conditions. Another Instagram post described the big cats as “survivors and warriors, roaring through the snowstorm,” as if they were adapting to new behaviors. Other comments from the post highlighted how the lions utilized their shelters. Some lions welcome the snow, while others do not like it at all.
