In China, bat soup is a controversial dish, sparking diverse reactions. An Instagram video shows a woman preparing bat soup for her children, displaying the intact mammal and its organs. Criticism followed, highlighting the risk of zoonotic diseases like Ebola and Marburg viruses. This controversy recalls similar incidents, emphasizing health concerns.

The China dish ‘Bat Soup’ has sparked diverse reactions among users, with some regarding it as a delicacy and others condemning it as a harmful dish. Putting aside these varying opinions, a video has surfaced on Instagram featuring a woman preparing bat soup for her children. In the video, the woman is seen holding the intact mammal, complete with fur and body parts, and displaying it to the camera. Subsequently, the clip shows her placing the pieces of the mammal into a bowl, closely showing their internal organs to the audience.

Social media users criticized the woman for the video, arguing that not everything should be shared. One user commented that such actions could lead to them contracting the Ebola virus, as most human cases result from contact with infected wildlife like bats or great apes used as food. Another user criticized her for not learning from the lessons of the coronavirus pandemic.

While the video’s location remains unknown, bat soup is reported to be a popular dish, particularly in Wuhan, China. It is believed that the virus originated at an open-air fish market in Wuhan.

In certain parts of the world, consuming bats is illegal due to the risk of zoonotic diseases, which are infections transmitted between animals and humans. Apart from the Ebola virus, bats are known carriers of the Marburg virus, which can be transmitted to humans who come into contact with them. These mammals may also harbor henipaviruses and strains of rabies.

In a related incident, a Thai video blogger was arrested after filming herself eating a bowl of bat soup. The video sparked outrage amid concerns about the potential for new pandemic viruses to jump to humans.
