Muzaffarnagar: The Ganga river water in Shukratal turned black due to pollution and contamination this weekend, after which, the locals began protesting by standing in the water.
The incident came to light when Mahakar Singh, the general secretary of Shri Ganga Seva Samiti, and Veerpal Nirwal, the district panchayat president and co-convener of Namami Ganga, joined the locals for the protest.
As soon as the protest began, Uttar Pradesh’s pollution control board team reached the spot and collected the samples of water.
The river Shukratal, located 30 kilometres from the Muzaffarnagar district headquarters, attracts a large number of ascetics and pilgrims throughout the year for a holy dip and other religious activities. The location is extremely religiously significant.

While talking to the media Imran Ali, The regional unit’s assistant environmental engineer said, “The contamination of the river was due to effluents released from factories in Laksar town in Uttarakhand. We have informed the concerned authorities there to conduct an investigation into the matter. A team is expected to arrive for further inspection.”
According to the locals and priest Acharya Ajay Krishan said the river is not even appropriate for bathing, “Due to the religious significance of the place, people come from far-off places here. However, the river has been polluted by the factories and devotees are forced to return without taking a bath. We demand immediate action on the matter.”
