The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a press release regarding the cosmic event. According to the IMD, the lunar eclipse will occur from 9:57 PM on Sunday, September 7, to 1:27 AM on Monday, September 8 (IST), as the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow. The eclipse will reach its peak at 11:42 PM. Skywatchers are encouraged not to miss this spectacular event!

In India, all phases of the eclipse including totality will be visible.
The umbral phase of this eclipse will begin at 9:57 PM IST on September 7, and will end at 1:27 AM IST on the following day, September 8.
The totality of this eclipse will begin at 11:00 PM IST on September 7, 2025, and will end at 12:23 AM IST on September 8, 2025.

Notably, the last lunar eclipse which was visible from India was on October 28, 2023 and it was a partial lunar eclipse. Lunar Eclipse occurs on a full moon day when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon and when all the three objects are aligned.
What Is A Total Lunar Eclipse?
A total lunar eclipse happens when the whole Moon moves into Earth’s shadow, while a partial lunar eclipse occurs only when a part of the Moon comes under shadow of the Earth.
Furthermore the IMD stated that next such event will occur on March 3, 2026, which makes this celestial event more special.
“On the serene night of Bhadra 16-17, as Sunday gently turns to Monday, the skies over India will unveil a breathtaking spectacle-a total lunar eclipse, visible in its entirety across the nation. From 9:57 PM to 1:27 AM IST, the Moon will journey through Earth’s shadow, with the moment of deepest eclipse gracing us at 11:42 PM,” the IMD stated in an X post.
“This cosmic event connects continents-from Antarctica to Asia, Europe to the Pacific-reminding us that under the same moon, we are one world. Let us pause, look up, and feel the quiet wonder of the universe. The next such embrace returns on 3rd March 2026-but this night is ours to cherish,” the IMD added.
