Today’s History, August 18: Important Historical Events Which Took Place On This Day

New Delhi: Someone has rightly said, “everyday has a significant history” . Therefore, it is necessary to be aware of all important historical event that fall on a specific day so that none of the major historical events are missed.’Today’s History’ will look into the significant historical events and major happenings on that particular day of year.

On August 18, following events took place:

1900: Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit birthday

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was an Indian diplomat and politician who was the 6th Governor of Maharashtra from 1962 to 1964 and 8th President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1953 to 1954, the first woman appointed to either post. Hailing from a prominent political family, her brother Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India, her niece Indira Gandhi the first female Prime Minister of India and her grand-nephew Rajiv Gandhi was the sixth Prime Minister of India.

1934: Gulzar was born

Sampooran Singh Kalra known professionally as Gulzar, is an Indian poet, lyricist, author, screenwriter, and film director known for his works in Hindi cinema. He started his career with music director S.D. Burman as a lyricist in the 1963 film Bandini and worked with many music directors including R. D. Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Vishal Bhardwaj and A. R. Rahman. Gulzar also writes poetry, dialogues and scripts. He directed films such as Aandhi and Mausam during the 1970s and the TV series Mirza Ghalib in the 1980s. He also directed Kirdaar in 1993.

 

1967- Singer Daler Mehndi was born

Daler Singh better known as Daler Mehndi, is an Indian singer, songwriter, author, and record producer. He has helped to make Bhangra popular worldwide, as well as Indian pop music independent of Bollywood music. He is best known for his dance songs, voice, turban, and long, flowing robes.

 

1972- Actor Ranvir Shorey Birthday

Ranvir Shorey is an Indian actor and former VJ who works in Hindi films and television. Since making his debut in Ek Chhotisi Love Story (2002), he has starred in a number of high-profile films such as Jism (2003) and Lakshya (2004). He has also starred in the critically acclaimed films such as Traffic Signal, Bheja Fry (2007) and the critical and commercial hit Mithya (2008)
