A rising trend of employees from elite institutions turning to side jobs is transforming the food delivery industry, leading to significant changes in income levels. Historically, workers for Swiggy and Zomato have complained about low wages and poor working conditions. However, recent interviews conducted by the YouTube channel Full Disclosure reveal a surprising shift. Delivery riders from these companies now report earning between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 per month, exceeding the average earnings of IT professionals. One rider even shared he saved Rs 2 lakh in just six months.
A Zomato delivery agent detailed his earnings: ‘I make Rs 1500 – Rs 2000 daily, translating to Rs 10,000 – Rs 12,000 weekly, and about Rs 40,000 – Rs 50,000 monthly. Tips and incentives can add up to Rs 5000 monthly. Rates increase during rain, and I manage to save around Rs 30,000 every month. I’ve already saved Rs 2 lakh in six months and plan to invest in a business in my village to create jobs.’
The video has sparked varied reactions. One viewer noted, ‘Making Rs 40,000 as a delivery partner isn’t easy; it requires over 12-hour workdays.’ Another remarked, ‘I’m surprised at the earnings and am considering buying a bike.’ A third person added, ‘The video’s conclusion highlighted the importance of taking risks for one’s passions.’
The YouTuber clarified that delivery partners for Swiggy and Zomato are not full-time employees and do not receive a fixed salary. Instead, they work flexible shifts without contracts, choosing from full-time, part-time, or short slots. They receive orders assigned by the company, with a fixed minimum payment for each delivery: Rs 40 from Zomato and Rs 20 from Swiggy, plus additional pay for distances beyond 5 km.
