New Delhi: Addressing the issue of crimes against women on the occasion of 78th Independence Day, PM Modi emphasized the need for taking strictest actions against heinous acts referring to the Kolkata rape-murder case. His reaction comes in light of the recent rape and murder case of a Kolkata trainee doctor, leading to a CBI investigation.
PM Modi expressed his pain on ongoing situation in the country from Red Fort on Thursday and said “As a society, we have to seriously think about the atrocities taking place in the country.” PM said that he can feel the public outrage over crimes against mothers & sisters. He emphasized on the need to carry out probes and award strictest punishment at the earliest.
PM calls for swift investigations
In a veiled attack on TMC government over Kolkata rape-murder incident, PM said “The country, society and state governments should take this seriously”. He added that it is the need of the hour to speed up investigations and ensure every perpetrator is swiftly punished to instil faith in society.

PM advocates for discussions on Capital Punishment
PM stressed on the need to carry out extensive discussions on punishments given to the convicts inorder to potentially understand that such crimes lead to capital punishment.
PM also pointed out that when acts of violence against women happen, it leads to a lot of media discussions. However, when punishments are given to the perpetrators, media probably doesn’t show it much.
On August 9, the body of a 31-year old trainee doctor was found raped and murdered in the seminar hall of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical Hospital.
