In a startling turn of events, a  civil servant robot of south korea reportedly ‘committed suicide,’ allegedly throwing itself down a staircase under mysterious circumstances. The Gumi City Council stated that the robot malfunctioned and was discovered severely damaged in a stairwell between the building’s first and second floors, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Residents of the South Korean city are grieving over what has been described as the first robot suicide. Witnesses observed the robot hovering in one place as if sensing something before the mysterious incident occurred. However, authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of its fall. An official stated, ‘Fragments have been gathered and will undergo analysis by the company.’

According to the report, the robot’s duties included daily document deliveries, promoting the city, and providing information to local residents. A Gumi City Council official described it as ‘officially part of city hall, one of our own,’ noting that the robot served diligently. This marked the city’s inaugural use of such technology, with the robot starting its role in October 2023.

Online speculation arose whether the robot was overwhelmed by its workload. ‘Would he have spun around and rushed down the stairs if the workload was too much?’ questioned one individual, as the incident gained local media attention. Another remarked, ‘I hope that scrap metal finds peace.’ A comment on X stated, ‘Robots need breaks, vacations, and benefits; they need a union.’

The robotic assistant, created by California-based startup Bear Robotics, had its own employee card and operated from 9 am to 4 pm. Unlike typical robots confined to one floor, the Gumi City Council’s robot could independently call elevators and move between floors. Currently, there are no plans to replace the robot. South Korea is known for extensively integrating robots into various professions.

Previously, a security robot named Steve allegedly ‘committed suicide’ by falling into a water fountain in Washington DC. However, it was later discovered that the accident occurred due to the robot skidding on a loose brick surface, causing it to tumble four stories into the fountain.
