West Bengal: A 25-year-old man, hailing from South 24 Parganas, Kolkata has gained tremendous popularity on social media, earning praise not only within the country but also internationally. With a vision to offer underprivileged students a better education, he shared a video urging people to help him raise funds for his project.
It is believed that Wali Rehman had a humble childhood. His father used to pull a rickshaw to support the family, including Wali’s education. Despite facing numerous hardships, he ventured into the leather business, which provided some financial relief.
He held a childhood dream of establishing an English medium school for underprivileged children, equipped with facilities like the ones that are in prestigious rural schools. However, financial constraints initially prevented him from fulfilling his dream. Undeterred by the troubles, Wali initiated his vision on a smaller scale with the creation of Umeed Academy.
He rented a school space, and to his surprise, approximately 300 children quickly enrolled. The demand for admission grew exponentially, with around 1,500 children now waiting in line to join Wali’s school.
Recognizing the need for more space and resources, Wali resolved to build a school to provide quality education. He secured land for the school and commenced to effortlessly raise funds. Despite seeking assistance from various quarters, Wali faced challenges. While some offered mere promises, others provided minimal financial support, such as Rs 1000. His target for constructing the school was Rs 10 crore. But, as a consequence of people’s lack of interest in aiding, his progress was slow.
However, Wali’s determination led him to a turning point. He created a compelling video to garner support for his dreams and the bright future of the school’s children. The video captivated viewers, inspiring them to contribute. People began sending donations of Rs 100, Rs 200, Rs 500, and Rs 1000 to the bank account specified by Wali on social media. Within a remarkable six days, he collected Rs 6 crore for the school’s construction.
Expressing his gratitude, Wali released another video to thank the generous contributors. He also appealed to the 20 crore Muslims in the country, urging just 20 lakh individuals to contribute Rs 100 each, which would raise Rs 10 crore for the school. Wali’s remarkable efforts have garnered support from various Muslim organizations and banks, all commending his outstanding achievement.
