An incident on the Vande Bharat Express has sparked widespread reactions on social media after an elderly passenger mistakenly consumed non-vegetarian food and slapped a waiter in anger. The event was captured in videos shared on X (formerly Twitter) on July 27.

The videos depict passengers and catering staff standing in the aisle of the  Vande Bharat train, with some passengers urging the elderly man to apologize to the waiter by repeatedly saying, “Maafi maang (say sorry).” According to the caption accompanying the videos, the elderly passenger, who is a vegetarian, did not notice the instructions on the food package and consumed the non-vegetarian meal. Realizing his mistake, he became furious and slapped the waiter.

The incident quickly gained attention online, with numerous individuals expressing their opinions on the matter. One user commented, “It is assault. The person should be booked.” Another highlighted the irony of the situation, stating, “The whole point of vegetarianism is non-violence, and if you are hitting people, you are actually in violation of non-violence.”

Several users called for actions against both the elderly passenger and the catering staff. “Please book a case on senior citizens. This attitude towards railway workers is not accepted. He should be punished for sure. In parallel, please take action against the staff who served non-veg to the passenger,” expressed one individual. Another suggested, “Railway should also have a passenger blacklisting system like aviation.”

Opinions were divided, with some condemning the elderly man’s actions while others criticized both parties involved. One user stated, “The old man did wrong by slapping the waiter. The guy in the red T-shirt also did wrong by hitting the old man on the head and shoulder. Both should be punished.” Another added, “The elderly man has no right to slap a waiter for supplying him with a meal that is not appropriate for him. The meal package is well-marked for vegetarians or non-vegetarians. If he ignores it, it is his mistake. A slap cannot punish his own mistake. He must apologize to the waiter.”

The incident has sparked a debate on social media, highlighting issues of customer service, dietary preferences, and appropriate responses to such mistakes.
