Romantic Hike: A passionate climber and nurse, 31-year-old Valentina Fino from Bologna has been the victim of a terrible accident while trekking in the Italian Apennines. Days off from the oncological ward, where she had been caring for patients with cancer, had been used by Valentina to get out into the great outdoors with her partner, 34-year-old Andrea Pedata. It was this passion for climbing that brought them to the stunning pass of Pietra Tagliata last Saturday, where a routine hike went very wrong.

Andrea documented Valentina’s last moments before the accident occurred. She showed self-assurance in climbing the cliff, carrying her backpack, clearly not realizing that it would be her final video. Moments later, she slipped and fell some 330 feet down the face of Barbarossa trail, sustaining fatal injuries. Andrea, who had witnessed the fall, called for help and descended the ridge to save her but was too late.

Climbing Tragedy And Selfie Disaster

Andrea, in tears, described the moment, ‘I heard a scream and I saw her fall,’ adding, ‘I’m destroyed, it hurts too much.’ He said he remembered their plans for the future but added some comfort came from knowing she died doing what she loved.

Valentina’s body was later recovered by police and firefighters. The funeral will be on Wednesday at the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Borgo Panigale.

It comes just days after a second tragedy in which another Italian tourist, Giancarlo Zicari, 49, died when he plunged 82 feet while trying to take a selfie with his girlfriend in Bali. The couple was on holiday from Matera when a railing gave way at the Gajah Mas waterfalls in the district of Baturiti.
