The controversy began when Suparno Satpathy, a socio-political leader from Odisha, posted pictures of the Rewort beer cans with Gandhi’s image.
In a post on X, Satpathy requests Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in and talk to Russian authorities about the matter.
“My humble request with PM @narendramodi ji is to take up this matter with his friend @KremlinRussia_E. It has been found that Russia’s Rewort is selling Beer in the name of Gandhiji,” Satpathy wrote in the caption of his post.
He urged Prime Minister Modi to raise the issue with Russian authorities after pictures of Rewort beer cans featuring Mahatma Gandhi’s image went viral on social media.

A video of two Indian men holding Rewort beer cans also went viral on Instagram.
As pictures of the beer cans spread online, many social media users criticized the brand, saying it was disrespectful. One user called it “shocking and unacceptable,” while another said, “This is an insult to India.”
The anger grew, with some suggesting legal action, like filing a case in the International Court of Justice to ban the brand. Others wanted the issue discussed in Parliament and on TV debates.
Rewort has not yet responded to the controversy.
