In a troubling incident, a man found bugs inside the chicken pieces of a biryani he ordered from a restaurant in Hyderabad. The customer, identified as Sai Teja, shared photos of the contaminated biryani from Mehfil Biryani in Hyderabad’s Kukatpally on social media. A closer inspection of the photo revealed maggots in the chicken pieces of the biryani he ordered online.
He tagged @cfs_telangana for intervention and reported the incident to Swiggy, which responded, ‘We regret that your order did not meet expectations; packaging is managed solely by the restaurant.’
To appease the customer, a Swiggy customer service representative proposed a Rs. 64 refund for the affected items from a total bill of Rs. 318. Unhappy with the restaurant, Sai Teja voiced his frustration on social media, tweeting: ‘Avoid ordering from Mehfil Kukatpally.’ Additionally, when trying to file a complaint through the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) website, he faced a hurdle, explaining, ‘Even after entering all required information, the system keeps asking for more details.’

The post quickly went viral, igniting public outrage. One commenter lamented, ‘It’s unfortunately common nowadays. Don’t expect more than minimal taste. No one challenges this mafia-like system. Just boycott online food.’ Another user raised safety concerns, questioning, ‘If consuming such items unexpectedly leads to harm, is a Rs. 64 refund sufficient compensation?’
Echoing similar incidents, a third user shared, ‘I faced the same issue and even found sharp plastic in the food. Swiggy seems focused solely on business with vendors.’
Meanwhile, a fourth stated, ‘At Vasista Srilakshmi, Kondapur, I found aluminum foil in the curry, but @cfs_telangana remains inactive.’
However, he was subsequently contacted by a Swiggy customer service representative and received a full refund.
