New Delhi: After a dog was found dead on March 14, a complaint was filed against a sanitation worker of the Municipal Committee in Manali. FIR was filed by the local resident that the dog was poisoned.

According to the animal rescue charity Manali Strays, six stray dogs, including a pet, were poisoned at the same time. A member of charity rescue, Gaurav Schimar, said that dogs are being poisoned as the municipal council filed the complaint to control the dog population. He added that eyewitnesses have claimed that several dogs, including one pet, were fed poisoned ladoos, but police only filed complaints for the killing of one dog.

Manali DSP KD Sharma stated that a post-mortem was performed to determine the cause of the dog’s death. According to police, the complaint was filed by a man working as a caretaker and cook in a hotel who was persuaded to do so by an NGO that helps stray dogs.

Chaman Kapoor, president of the Municipal Committee said, “One dog died after being hit by a local man who was being bitten by the dog. There was no need for a police case. We will launch a sterilization campaign to control the population of stray canines. I am in talks with the local veterinary department for this.”

While MC denied that six dogs were poisoned, NGO representatives claimed to have videos of dead dogs and a voice recording of the MC worker admitting his mistake.

The autopsy report was awaited, according to Manali Deputy Superintendent of Police K D Sharma, but a case under Section 429 (killing animals by poisoning) of the IPC and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act had been filed.
