In a significant trend reflecting evolving societal norms, Indore has become a hub for diverse surgical procedures, including a notable surge in gender change surgeries. Over the past five years, the city has witnessed a tenfold increase in cosmetic surgeries, appealing particularly to youth aged 17 to 22 seeking enhancements like facelifts, jaw-line corrections, and lip augmentations.

Reports highlight Indore’s prominence as the second city nationwide for such surgeries, drawing patients not only from across India but also from neighboring countries like Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. Government initiatives have further facilitated accessibility to gender change surgeries by integrating them into the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, previously categorized under cosmetic procedures.

The city boasts around 30 plastic surgeons specializing in various surgical interventions, providing comprehensive care within Indore itself. Dr. Sumit Jaiswal, a leading plastic and reconstructive aesthetic surgeon, notes the rising demand for gender change surgeries, with Indore conducting the majority of these procedures. Monthly, 30 to 35 individuals travel to Indore seeking gender transition services, reflecting a growing acceptance and accessibility facilitated by governmental support.

Dr. Sachin Verma, head of the plastic surgery department at MYH Hospital, underscores the diversity of procedures offered locally, including dimple creation, gynecomastia treatments, and eyelid surgeries. Such interventions not only cater to aesthetic preferences but also address medical needs like cancer reconstructive surgeries, handled by a select few specialists in the city.

Dr. Mahendra Kumar Gupta from Bombay Hospital emphasizes the broader scope of plastic surgery, encompassing both reconstructive procedures for accident victims and aesthetic enhancements like rhinoplasty and liposuction. Indore’s healthcare infrastructure supports a broad spectrum of surgical services, meeting the diverse demands of its populace, particularly among younger and middle-aged demographics keen on enhancing their appearance.

Indore’s prominence as a center for advanced medical treatments underscores its growing role in facilitating transformative surgical interventions, making it a destination of choice for both local and international patients seeking specialized care.
