In a startling case of medical oddity, a 60-year-old farmer from Madhya Pradesh recently grabbed headlines after doctors removed a bottle gourd (lauki) from his rectum. This incident, though unusual, underscores the increasingly common practice of foreign object extraction by medical professionals worldwide.
According to the Times of India, the farmer sought medical attention for severe stomach pain. An X-ray revealed the surprising cause of his discomfort: a bottle gourd lodged in his rectum. The exact circumstances leading to this unusual situation remain unclear, as the man did not provide any explanation.
Upon his admission to the hospital, the patient underwent a complex two-hour surgery led by Dr. Manoj Chaudhary, Dr. Nandkishore Jatav, Dr. Ashish Shukla, and Dr. Sanjay Maurya. The doctors successfully removed the foreign object and reported that the patient is now out of danger and recovering.
Dr. Chaudhary speculated that the incident might be related to mental illness, a testicular disorder, or an accident. The hospital has launched an investigation to uncover the specifics of how the bottle gourd ended up in the rectum.

This case echoes a similar incident from March in Vietnam, where a 34-year-old man was found to have a live eel in his abdomen after suffering from severe cramps. The eel had entered through the anus and traveled through the colon. Dr. Pham Manh Hung, Head of Surgery at Hai Ha District Medical Center, noted that while such cases are rare, the surgery was performed safely despite the risk of bacterial infection.
