In China, several visitors at Shanwei Zoo were left shell-shocked after they found out the cute pandas they were gazing at were painted ‘chow chow’ dogs. The angry visitors were shocked to find one of the pandas ‘barking’.
This bizarre incident captured on camera by a tourist shows one of the painted pandas lying on the rock, followed by another dog with a long, curly tail. The zoo attempted to justify the ploy by describing the animals as a unique species, popularly known as ‘panda dogs.’

Visitors Demands Refunds
The zoo’s effort at deception was quickly dispelled when it became apparent that the authorities simply dyed two chow chow (spitz breed in northern China). According to reports, the angry visitors requested refunds after knowing the truth.
Fake Pandas Discovered At Taizhou Zoo
This is, however, not the first time a Chinese zoo has faced backlash for such an incident. In May, the Taizhou Zoo in Jiangsu Province faced criticism for dyeing pandas. According to officials, since there were no pandas at the zoo, the officials resorted to this scam. The practice was condemned by public and state media, which feared the risk it exposed to ‘dogs.’
The event reminds everybody of great ethical issues pertinent to animal treatment by zoos. As the debate goes, there are calls by animal lovers for stiffer regulations regarding the treatment of animals.
