Bengaluru: A major tragedy was narrowly averted on Saturday morning when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus swerved to avoid a collision and ended up precariously hanging off a flyover on the Bengaluru-Tumakuru highway. The incident, which occurred near the Madanayakanahalli flyover close to Nelamangala, left eight people with minor injuries, including the driver and conductor.
The KSRTC bus, carrying approximately 40 passengers, was traveling from Somwarpete to Bengaluru. According to Nelamangala traffic police, the accident happened when the driver lost control of the vehicle while navigating the flyover ramp.
Driver who lost control is still under investigation, reports suggest a swift reaction by the driver might have prevented a catastrophic event. In an attempt to avoid hitting a car, the driver reportedly swerved the bus, causing it to collide with the median separating the two sides of the highway.

The impact of the collision was such that the front portion of the bus remained on the road, while the rear end of the vehicle ended up hanging precariously over the edge of the flyover, approximately 40 feet above the ground. The bus came to a halt after hitting the retaining wall of the flyover, preventing it from plummeting down to the road below.
Passengers Evacuated Safely
News reports and visuals circulating online show the horrifying sight of the mangled bus precariously balanced on the flyover. All passengers were safely evacuated from the bus, six passengers and the two crew members onboard the bus sustained minor injuries and were promptly shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, no serious injuries were reported.
Traffic Disrupted, Investigation Underway
The accident caused significant traffic disruption on the busy highway for nearly an hour. Police officials quickly responded to the incident and ensured all passengers’ safe evacuation. Traffic movement was eventually restored after the mangled bus was towed away from the scene.
The Nelamangala traffic police have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Authorities are examining various factors, including potential mechanical issues with the bus, road conditions, and driver error.
The KSRTC is yet to issue an official statement regarding the accident. However, the swift action by the driver and the fortuitous presence of the retaining wall undoubtedly prevented a much worse outcome. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the need for regular maintenance of public vehicles.
