A young engineer from Mangaluru has gone viral after inventing a quirky device that can detect when he is hungry and instantly order food online. His unusual creation has sparked curiosity, amusement and debate across social media.
Idea Behind the Invention
Many office-goers often get so busy with work that they end up skipping meals without realising it. Sitting for hours in front of laptops, jumping between calls and trying to meet deadlines, hunger is usually ignored until the stomach finally growls.
With the same thought in mind, techie Sohan M Rai created a gadget that listens for stomach rumbles and automatically places an order on Zomato. He showcased it in his Instagram series called “Inventions You Will Never Think Of.”
Hunger-Sensing, Self-Ordering Device
Rai named the gadget MOM, which stands for Meal Ordering Module. It is a small device that can be clipped onto a belt. The moment the stomach makes a growling sound, MOM picks it up through its sensors and sends a signal to order food.
To build the device, he used a stethoscope borrowed from his sister, a small microphone, a sound sensor, a battery and an ESP32 chip that sends data to a local server using Wi-Fi. He also 3D-printed a case for the gadget and added a switch.
According to Rai, the software can even understand the intensity of the growl. He explained that if the growling sound is longer, it means he is hungrier, so the device might order two pizzas or a full biryani. The system can check nearby restaurants, their ratings, prices, personal preferences and previous orders to pick the best option.
Rai added that the device uses Claude AI to estimate how hungry he is by analysing the sound pattern of the stomach rumble.
Internet Divided: Useful or Unnecessary?
Social media users reacted with a mix of humour, curiosity and confusion on his Instagram post. Some praised his creativity, saying the device was perfect for people with demanding jobs. Others jokingly asked how he tested the invention. Some viewers felt it belonged in the category of unnecessary inventions, while a few pointed out that stomach growling does not always mean hunger.
Who Is Sohan M Rai?
Rai runs an Instagram page called “zikiguy” where he shares various technology-related videos. He completed his engineering degree from Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management. After working as an intern at different tech companies, he started his own startup and also makes regular content for social media.
He earlier went viral in 2023 for joining Zomato as a delivery boy for a day and delivering food using an autonomous drone that he built himself. He shared that it was an experiment done with all safety measures and that the drone would perform even better if developed commercially.
