Rarely do the words ‘pink’ and ‘tandoori chicken’ find themselves together, unless you stumble upon this recent culinary creation. A popular food Instagram account showcased a video featuring tandoori chicken coated in a pink sauce, served alongside mint chutney at a Mumbai restaurant. While the dish garnered over 37,000 likes, comments playfully criticized its novelty.

One of the top comments on the video humorously remarked, ‘Barbie-q chicken,’ in reference to Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film Barbie, known for its all-pink theme. Others joked about the chicken’s pink hue, with one suggesting ‘Gelusil syrup,’ a popular pink antacid, and another proposing ‘Solkadhi-flavored chicken,’ referencing the pinkish Solkadi drink made from coconut milk and kokum.

The source of the chicken’s pink color remains undisclosed. However, when someone suggested beetroot mixed with curd as the likely ingredient, the food account responded with multiple heart emojis, confirming the accuracy of the guess.

Some expressed shock and disappointment at the dish. One Instagram user wrote, ‘Baapre.. my immediate reaction.’ Another person said, ‘This made me physically sick.’ Someone else questioned, ‘The question isn’t about which color is added. The question is why?’

This isn’t the first instance of cooks incorporating pink color into unconventional dishes. Earlier this year, Mumbai-based baker Heena Kausar Raad created pink-colored biryani and accompanying pink raita for a Barbie-themed party. She shared in her video caption, ‘Pink biryani, it’s Barbie biryani.’ The baker also mentioned preparing other pink side dishes to complement the biryani.
