New Delhi: The International Day of Democracy is observed every year on September 15, with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy. In the words of the United Nations, “International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of the international community, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality.”

International Day of Democracy: Theme

This year,International Day of Democracy is focused on the “importance of media freedom to democracy, peace, and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals”.

International Day of Democracy: History

It was established through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007, encouraging governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy. International Day of Democracy is to provide an opportunity for people to participate in democracy and urges the government to respect the rights of people. The day was first observed in 2008 and since then, it has been marked every year globally.

International Day of Democracy: Significance

This day holds great significance. It highlights the importance of a healthy democracy and its role in enabling the citizens to voice their opinions. It also plays a very important role in making people aware of their human rights and ensuring peace and justice.
