Consumption of alcohol is dangerous. There are so many countries that made unusual laws regarding the purchase, sale, and consumption of alcohol, and these rules often go viral on the internet.
One such Muslim country has recently introduced a new rule for buying alcohol, which has left everyone shocked.
Under this rule, people can purchase alcohol simply by showing their salary slip. Reports say the rule applies only to those whose monthly income is 50,000 riyals or more, which is approximately Rs 11 lakh.
Saudi Arabia’s New Alcohol Rule
According to a Bloomberg report, in Saudi Arabia, people need only their salary slip to purchase alcohol. To buy alcohol from a shop in Riyadh, buyers must first prove their income by showing their salary slip.
Although the shop was initially opened for foreign diplomats, alcohol has also been sold to non-Muslims holding premium residency status for some time now.
The Saudi government, however, has not issued any official comment regarding this news.
What Is Premium Residency?
According to the official website, the Saudi Premium Residency Program (also known as the Saudi Green Card) allows skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors to live, work, and own businesses or property in Saudi Arabia.
Launched in 2019, applicants must be 21 years or older, undergo a medical test to prove good health, have no criminal record, and possess sufficient financial resources to support themselves and their dependents.
Social Media Is Buzzing
After this new rule went viral, netizens shared mixed reactions. Some were amused, while others criticized it.
One user joked that the rule is “only for the rich.” Another commented, “Showing proof of income just to buy a bottle of alcohol is crazy.”
A third user said, “No alcohol for the poor is ridiculous.”
A fourth user humorously added, “Thank God this rule is not in India.”
