New Delhi: In a horrific incident, a woman lost her four limbs due to consuming undercooked seafood. The woman developed severe issues in her body, including the process of kidney failure.
The tragic incident occurred in California. As per her friends, this devastating outcome was the result of a bacterial infection, believed to have been caused by eating undercooked tilapia contaminated with a deadly bacteria.
The 40-year-old mother named Laura Barajas underwent life-saving surgery on Thursday after a month in the hospital, the New York Post reported.
“It’s been very heavy for all of us, it’s terrible. This could happen to any of us,” Anna Messina, a friend of Ms. Barajas, told KRON.
Messina said Barajas became sick after eating fish she bought at a local market in San Jose and prepared herself at home. “She almost lost her life. She has to use a ventilator,” Ms. Messina said.
“They put her in a medically induced coma. Her fingers are black, its paws are black, and its lower lip is black. She had complete sepsis and her kidneys were failing,” she added.
Ms. Messina said Barajas was infected with Vibrio vulnificus, a potentially deadly bacteria commonly found in fresh seafood and seawater. This highlights the critical importance of proper preparation and handling of seafood to avoid such serious health risks.
