New Delhi: Hindi Diwas is observed on September 14, every year. Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world after English, Spanish and Mandarin. One of the reasons behind celebrating this day is to prevent the increasing trend of the English language in the nation and the neglect of Hindi. It is to be noted that Mahatma Gandhi called Hindi the language of the masses. The Father of the Nation also talked about making Hindi the national language of the nation.
History
The day also commemorate the event when Hindi was adopted as one of the official languages of India. The Constituent Assembly of India had, in 1949, recognised and adopted Hindi — an Indo-Aryan language written in the Devanagari script — as the official language of the country. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages of the Republic of India.
Significance
This day is celebrated to honour respect to the Hindi language and many cultural festivals are observed on this day across the country to celebrate Hindi literature. The awards like Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar and Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar are bestowed to the Ministries, Departments, PSUs, Nationalised Banks, and citizens on Hindi Diwas for their contribution Hindi language.
