A Connecticut woman was stunned to learn she had unknowingly slept with her half-brother. Her mother’s fertility doctor had used his sperm to help conceive children with his patients, and she was unaware of this. Victoria Hill, 39, said it was very upsetting to find out she had been with her half-brother from high school.
At least 23 people claim they were born because Dr. Burton Caldwell used his sperm without informing their parents. Victoria’s mother, Maralee, was misled by Caldwell, who said he would use sperm from an anonymous medical student.
How she discovered about her Brother?
Victoria told that she discovered her father wasn’t her biological dad after taking a DNA test with 23andMe. At a high school reunion 20 years later, she shared her story, and her old boyfriend realized something similar had happened to him. He took the same DNA test and was shocked by the results.
Victoria received a text from her ex-boyfriend that said, “You’re my sister.” She told the news, “I now see my whole high school experience very differently. It changes everything.” She added, “I’ll just put it this way: I was intimate with my half-brother.”
She mentioned that she went to elementary school with another sibling and frequently visited a deli run by twins who turned out to be her family. “That traumatized me,” she said. “Now, when I look at pictures of people, I think: If he could be my sibling, anyone could be my sibling.”
Victoria thought about suing the doctor but was advised that her case might not be strong because the laws on fertility fraud are unclear. There are no national laws on this issue, and only 13 states provide protection.
Despite the challenges, social worker Janine Pierson, one of Hill’s half-sisters, decided to take action against the retired doctor. Janine thought she was an only child but only until she took a 23andMe test in 2022.
