Heatwave Crisis: North India Nears 48°C, Red Alert For Five Days | Top 10 Hottest Cities Identified

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "red alert" for Delhi and parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, forecasting severe heatwave conditions for the next five days, with temperatures potentially exceeding 47 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Delhi and parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, predicting continuation of the heatwave for severe heatwave conditions for the next five days.

The daily maximum temperature may exceed 47 degrees Celsius in many parts of these states.

Severe heat waves were observed in several parts of northwest India, parts of Rajasthan and isolated pockets of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, the Met department said.

Besides, hot night conditions were observed in some parts of Rajasthan, it said.

Sirsa in Haryana recorded the highest temperature of 47.8°C on Tuesday, followed by Najafgarh in Delhi at 47.4°C.

Heatwave warning on 22 May

Heat wave to severe heat wave is likely to continue in the plains of Northwest India and heat waves are expected in North Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat for the next five days.

Many parts of Central India will see a gradual rise in temperature by about 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next five days.

No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over NW India and Maharashtra during the next 24 hours, after which the temperature will increase gradually by 2-3°C.

Delhi weather updates for today

The IMD has forecast that Delhi will have mostly clear skies on Wednesday.

Some areas may experience heatwave conditions, and strong surface winds, ranging from 20-30 km/h with occasional gusts, are expected during the day.

Update Over Monsoon-2024

According to IMD, conditions are favorable for the advance of Southwest Monsoon over Southeast Arabian Sea, further Maldives, Comoros region, southern Bay of Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and other parts of Andaman Sea during the next two days.

Coastal and southern parts of Karnataka will have isolated showers on May 22-23. Over Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on May 24; and over Kerala on 25 May.

In addition, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal will get into ease from 22nd  to 23rd  May; Over Kerala and Mahe on 24 May.

Isolated very heavy rains will occur over Kerala on May 22 and 23 as well.
