New Delhi: A celebration of one of the most special familial relationships, Daughter’s Day — as the name suggests — is a day dedicated to the daughters in the family. While different countries commemorate the day differently and on different dates, in India, it is celebrated on the last Sunday of September; as such, it falls on September 25 this year.  On this day, parents show their love and appreciation for their daughters by performing special gestures to show how much they care about them.

History

Gender discrimination has been prevalent for centuries with communities across the world preferring  a boy child. Such beliefs have led to many social evils, including female foeticide. Daughters’ Day acknowledges the joy of having and raising a daughter.

Significance

Daughter’s Day is celebrated for the very same reason – to remind people around the world that a girl child is not inferior to a boy child. The day is also celebrated to raise awareness about acceptance of a girl child and end the stigma which came with patriarchy.
